The strictest natural standard in the sport
Ten years drug free. Polygraph in your native language, urine testing under the World Anti-Doping Code, and random blood testing in and out of season. If you want a natural title that nobody gets to put an asterisk on, this is the one, and the prep has to be clean from the first week.
The standard, and what it means for your prep
The WNBF tests harder than anyone, which is most of the reason people choose it. It also means every supplement you take is my problem too, so we go through the whole list before prep starts.
Ten years, plus two on over-the-counter hormones
Athletes must be a minimum of ten years drug free from all anabolic androgenic agents, peptides, HGH and growth hormones, and a minimum of two years free of over-the-counter hormones, before their first competition. This has been the standard since January 1, 2019. A failed test involving steroids, growth hormones, peptides or SARMs is a lifetime ban. Nobody gets a warning first, so we check everything up front.
Polygraph, urine and blood
Polygraph testing administered in your native language, urine testing under the World Anti-Doping Code with GC/MS confirmation, and random in- and out-of-season blood testing at Olympic testing laboratories. Confirmatory IRMS testing is at the athlete’s expense.
The polygraph is a midweek appointment
It runs about 30 minutes, is usually done Wednesday, Thursday or Friday before a Saturday show, and stays valid for six weeks, which is long enough to cover a two-show block if we plan it that way.
Crossover rules changed for 2026
Athletes may now enter both Novice and Open, which is new this year, so most of the advice floating around online is out of date. Debut competitors may cross into Open and Novice, and age divisions may cross with either. Category crossovers are allowed only between Figure and Fit Body, and between Men’s Physique and Bodybuilding. Win a Novice class of five or more and you are required to move up to Open.
Seven categories, two of which the others do not run
The WNBF lineup is not a subset of the NPC’s. Fit Body exists here and nowhere else on this list, while Wellness and Women’s Physique do not exist here at all.
Bodybuilding
Full mandatories at natural conditioning. The flagship category.
Classic Physique
Proportion and lines with a size cap. Cannot be crossed over at pro level.
Men's Physique
Board shorts and upper body. May cross over with Bodybuilding.
Bikini
Balance and presentation at a natural conditioning ceiling.
Figure
Shoulders, back and taper. May cross over with Fit Body.
Fit Body
A WNBF category with no NPC or OCB equivalent. Athletic look, own judging criteria.
Fitness Model
The softest conditioning target of the seven, judged on marketable athletic aesthetic. Closest NPC equivalent is Fit Model.

What a WNBF-pathway show costs
Verified in September 2026 against the amateur show attached to the WNBF Pro Am Midwest Natural. WNBF data is thinner than the other two. This is one real show, not a broad range, so treat it as an anchor rather than a national average.
WNBF-specific
The same at every show
A first WNBF-pathway show in the Midwest, one class, two hotel nights, tan, photos and trunks, lands around $750-$900 plus the $100 affiliate card.
Figures read off 2026 entry forms and vendor price pages in September 2026, for US Midwest shows. Promoters set their own fees and they move every season, so use these to budget and confirm against your specific show’s entry form. Not included: travel, food, the prep itself, or coaching.
WNBF prep, answered
How long do I have to be drug free to compete in the WNBF?
Ten years. Athletes must be a minimum of ten years drug free from all anabolic androgenic agents, peptides, HGH and growth hormones, plus a minimum of two years free of over-the-counter hormones, before their first competition. That standard took effect January 1, 2019 and applies across WNBF and affiliate organizations. It is the strictest requirement of any major federation.
How does WNBF drug testing work?
Polygraph testing with a WNBF-approved and licensed examiner, administered in the athlete’s native language, combined with urine testing conducted according to the World Anti-Doping Code with GC/MS analysis of testosterone ratios. The WNBF also runs random blood testing in and out of season at Olympic testing laboratories. Confirmatory IRMS testing, if required, is at the athlete’s expense.
How long is a WNBF polygraph valid?
Six weeks, for both amateurs and pros. The test takes about 30 minutes and is usually completed on the Wednesday, Thursday or Friday before a Saturday competition. Six weeks is long enough to cover two shows, which is worth planning around if you want a second stage in the same block.
Which divisions does the WNBF run?
Seven categories: Fitness Model, Bikini, Figure, Fit Body, Bodybuilding, Classic Physique and Men’s Physique. Fit Body has no NPC or OCB equivalent; Fitness Model is close to the NPC’s Fit Model. Women compete in the Bodybuilding category rather than a separately named women’s division. The WNBF does not run Wellness or Women’s Physique, so if that is your category you would compete in the OCB or the NPC instead.
Can I enter both Novice and Open in the WNBF?
Yes, as of 2026. This changed recently and a lot of older advice online still says otherwise. Debut competitors may also cross into Open and Novice, and age divisions may cross with Open or Novice. Category crossovers are limited to Figure with Fit Body and Men’s Physique with Bodybuilding. If you win a Novice class of five or more, you are required to compete in Open going forward.
How does WNBF membership work?
A current WNBF amateur membership is required to compete, and memberships run eleven months rather than twelve. They expire at the end of the month before your competition month the following year, which catches people out. Membership is separate from event entry and drug-testing fees, and does not enter you into any particular show.
What does a WNBF-pathway show cost all in?
Roughly $750 to $900 for a first Midwest show with one class, plus about $100 for the affiliate membership: entry $110, the $50 cash polygraph, tanning $140 to $185, two hotel nights at $139 to $179, photos $90 to $115, and trunks or a suit. Two WNBF-specific warnings: the late fee is $100, the steepest of the three federations, and the membership you need is usually the amateur affiliate’s card rather than the $104 WNBF one, so check which your show requires before you pay.
